Illegal Logging
Illegal logging takes place when timber is harvested in violation of national laws. The clandestine nature of illegal logging makes its scale and value difficult to estimate in relation to the global trade in forest products, but strong evidence suggests that it is a substantial and growing problem. It is not just a tropical country problem; countries of the former Soviet Union are facing problems regulating their forests.

The UK timber trade is primarily of temperate origin and softwood (coniferous) from Scandinavia and North America. Nevertheless the UK Timber Trade Federation has accepted that it has a role to play in combating illegal logging. TTF members are committed to sourcing their timber and timber products from legal and well-managed forests. They work with suppliers and other stakeholders towards the complete elimination of illegal logging.
